This NSF Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant in the amount of $495,521 was awarded to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on September 1, 2024. The grant supports a collaborative research project to investigate the impacts of cold-season coastal wetland hydrology and freeze-thaw dynamics on lateral carbon fluxes in North Atlantic salt marshes.

The key goals of the project are to: 1) monitor soil temperatures, groundwater, and surface water levels/salinity/temperature to better understand marsh freezing processes; 2) quantify groundwater discharge across seasons and during storm events; and 3) evaluate seasonal variability in salt marsh porewater carbon concentrations and carbon outwelling to the tidal channel. This research will help refine estimates of carbon export from temperate salt marshes and improve understanding of their role as carbon sinks. The project includes a subaward to the U.S. Geological Survey's Office of the Director to support field measurements and carbon system geochemical analyses. The findings are expected to advance scientific knowledge about coastal hydrological processes and carbon cycling.
