This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) project grant of $550,000.00 awarded to the Regents of the University of Michigan will study the properties and engineering of encapsulin protein nanoreactors. The project aims to develop a generalizable and modular nanoreactor platform by designing and characterizing encapsulin-based protein shells optimized for small molecule flux. Through structure-guided rational design and pore engineering, the researchers will create novel protein shell prototypes to increase porosity without compromising the protective benefits of the encapsulation. The project also includes training opportunities for undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, as well as support for undergraduate research in synthetic biology. This award reflects NSF's mission to enable innovation, creativity, and excellence in engineering research and education.
