The National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program has awarded a $259,253 Project Grant to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) to investigate the impacts of sea breeze and steep surface gravity waves on nearshore air-sea fluxes. The overarching goal is to advance understanding of how ocean surface waves mediate the exchange of momentum and heat between the atmosphere and ocean, especially over spatial and temporal scales that are currently under-resolved by observations and models. The project will involve a field campaign to make detailed observations of surface wave characteristics and air-sea fluxes. The results will enable a more detailed description of the dynamical connection between the atmosphere and ocean as mediated by ocean surface waves. The educational component includes developing new modules to integrate surface waves and air-sea interaction into ocean engineering and oceanography curricula, and engaging the public in northern New England through interactive exhibits at the Seacoast Science Center. Subawards are planned for this award.
