This $530,121 five-year Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program will support research at the University of Minnesota to study techniques for allocating affordable housing efficiently and equitably. The project aims to: (i) increase housing voucher utilization and ensure more high-barrier households benefit, (ii) increase the rate at which voucher waiting lists move while reducing administrative overhead, (iii) reduce the number of households that return to homelessness after receiving rapid rehousing support, and (iv) ensure the allocation of new rental units offers opportunities to a diverse set of applicants. The research will develop dynamic models to capture long-term effects of housing policies, formulate suitable objectives, and recommend novel policies to achieve these goals. The project will also include an education and outreach plan to collaborate with practitioners, disseminate ideas through a blog and YouTube channel, and share innovative course materials.
