The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a Project Grant totaling $396,734 to the University of Illinois under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) on March 1, 2024. The purpose of this 5-year grant is to conduct research to elucidate the fundamental interfacial processes that occur in lithium-ion battery electrolytes, with the goal of guiding the development of safer, higher-energy, and more durable battery technologies. The project will utilize advanced in-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques, along with atomistic simulations, to study the dynamic formation and structure of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the anode-electrolyte interface. The insights gained are expected to serve as design principles for engineering novel electrolyte systems. In parallel, the project will also include education and outreach activities to disseminate knowledge on surface/interface science and renewable energy to the scientific community and general public, with a focus on engaging underrepresented minorities.
