The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a 5-year, $368,295 Discovery Research PreK-12 (DRK-12) Program grant titled "CAREER: SUPPORTING TEACHERS TO LEVERAGE STUDENTS' LANGUAGES IN MATHEMATICS" to North Carolina State University (NC State). This project partners with a public middle school to co-design, analyze, and improve teachers' "translanguaging pedagogies" - instructional approaches that draw on students' full linguistic repertoires as resources for mathematics learning. Key outcomes will include: 1) a bank of co-designed translanguaging resources for middle-school math teachers, 2) videos of translanguaging in action to guide teachers and researchers, 3) evidence on students' learning in translanguaging spaces, and 4) theory on teachers' learning of translanguaging pedagogies. By leveraging students' languages, this project aims to address persistent opportunity gaps for multilingual students in mathematics across the U.S.
