This $526,119 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program on February 15, 2024 will support research by the University of California, Berkeley to develop new scale-aware turbulence parameterizations for high-resolution weather prediction models. The goal is to improve the accuracy of weather and regional climate forecasts in the "gray zone" between 1-10 km grid resolutions, where traditional modeling approaches break down. The research aims to enable a broader range of weather and environmental applications at gray zone and finer resolutions, such as wind energy forecasting, wildfire smoke modeling, and air quality analysis in urban areas. As part of the project, two summer research opportunities will be provided to high school teachers in Stockton, California to develop hands-on air pollution curricula reaching 700 students over the first two years.
