The University of North Carolina at Charlotte received a $437,749 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program to investigate a new class of luminescent protein materials. The goal is to characterize the chemical and physical properties of known protein materials with desired properties, and screen other related proteins aided by machine learning, in order to identify, design, and develop novel biological luminophores. This research project will provide graduate and undergraduate students with interdisciplinary training in the biomaterials field, and extend hands-on research experience to local K-12 teachers through outreach programs. The award period runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027.
