This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $280,000 will support a comprehensive analysis of diversity programs both within ocean studies and across the broader STEM community. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) will conduct this two-year study to develop an evidence-based framework for advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, accessibility, and justice (DEIBAJ) goals in institutions critical to the development and success of the future ocean studies workforce. The study will engage STEM DEI experts, ocean studies DEI experts, and diverse communities to identify effective practices and metrics. The long-term goal is to implement the findings by creating an "action collaborative" - an active space for academic, research, non-profit, industry and other organizations to work together, share successes and challenges, and move beyond pro-forma policies to evidence-based practice.
