The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $473,006 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Arizona to continue development of a laser-based system for rapid, high-precision measurement of rare isotopes of carbon and oxygen in carbonates. The research seeks to expand capabilities of Tunable Infrared Laser Direct Absorption Spectroscopy (TILDAS) technology beyond existing mass spectrometry methods. The award will fund the purchase of a prototype instrument and addition of a new laser unit to enable simultaneous measurement of clumped isotopologues, oxygen-18, carbon-13, and oxygen-17 in carbonate samples in under 50 minutes. This integrated laser monitoring system provides unprecedented analytical capabilities that will significantly benefit the scientific community studying earth systems, atmospheric chemistry, and biology.
