The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $249,994 Project Grant under its Office of International Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.079) program to Cornell University. The goal of this 2-year award is to reduce the cost of energy for wind-generated electricity and enhance the reliability of wind turbines by addressing leading edge erosion (LEE), a key challenge facing the wind energy industry. The researchers will take a multi-disciplinary approach to improve forecasting of LEE, advance new detection methods to optimize repair scheduling, reduce LEE through materials science advances, and reduce damage by improving forecasting and detection of highly damaging events. This will involve a series of Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT) analyses, advancing fundamental science and engineering knowledge, and developing a multi-scale interdisciplinary model chain to generate a priori estimates of LEE potential across geographically dispersed wind turbine sites. The project brings together an international team of partners from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Norway, Denmark, and Spain to address this global challenge.
