The National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program awarded a $659,558 project grant to The Trustees of Princeton University to advance the understanding and application of tunable tensegrity structures and metamaterials. The 3-year project, starting on March 1, 2024, aims to: (i) design tensegrity structures with customized geometries, (ii) leverage additive manufacturing for rapid prototyping, (iii) construct large-scale tensegrity structures for applications like temporary shelters, (iv) develop programmable tensegrity-based metamaterials, and (v) investigate the influence of prestress on the dynamic characteristics of these materials. The research will be complemented by educational and outreach activities to disseminate the project's findings and capabilities. No subawards are planned under this grant.
