The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) was awarded a $586,577 project grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program to increase the retention and graduation of high-achieving, low-income engineering students through scholarships, culturally-responsive curriculum, and mentoring. Over 6 years, the grant will fund scholarships for 36 talented, full-time biomedical and chemical engineering students, the majority of whom will be first-generation, female, Hispanic, or African American. The project aims to increase positive engineering identity, implement culturally-relevant pedagogical approaches, enhance workforce readiness, and improve first-year retention and 6-year graduation rates for the scholarship recipients. The grant will also support the development of new CR2 curriculum, inclusive mentoring practices, and dissemination of project findings to the engineering education community.
