This National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program (CFDA 47.076) award provides $2,500,000 to Fayetteville State University (FSU), a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and Minority-Serving Institution, to support student-centered strategies, scholarships, and support services for student success in chemistry and materials science.

Over the six-year duration, the project will award scholarships of up to $15,000 per year to 40 unique full-time students pursuing associate and/or baccalaureate degrees in these fields. In addition to scholarships, the project will leverage existing student services and opportunities to expand and enhance a comprehensive academic and co-curricular ecosystem, including faculty and peer mentoring, summer bridge programs, computational thinking and technical skills-building workshops, cohort course scheduling, active learning and inquiry-based labs, undergraduate research experiences, and conference participation.

The project aims to increase the number of students in chemistry and materials science who graduate from FSU, as well as the number of students transferring from Fayetteville Technical Community College to FSU in those fields. The project will also investigate the impact of the technical skill-building and computational thinking activities on student academic performance, retention, and graduation in STEM.
