- This two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling $149,737 will support research into heterogeneous reactions of mercury in the Arctic environment under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). Professor Asaduzzaman of Pennsylvania State University will lead a team studying the interactions of oxidized mercury species with snow and ice through quantum chemical calculations. The research aims to characterize elementary steps controlling how...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $559,429 supported ambient-level hydroxyl radical detection using broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy in an open-path configuration from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2023. Funded through the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the award advanced the program's goals of strengthening fundamental understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic atmospheric and earth sciences research. Principal awardee Brigham Young University...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $432,778 Project Grant to the University of Connecticut under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) for research titled "Collaborative Research: The Effects of Terrestrial Organic Matter Inputs on Coastal Mercury Cycling, Methylmercury Production and Bioaccumulation." The three-year award beginning June 1, 2022 will support research examining how increased terrestrial organic matter delivery to coastal waters from climate change influences...
The National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences has awarded a $178,063 Project Grant titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: VERIFICATION OF ATMOSPHERIC MERCURY REDOX RATES" to Brigham Young University. This 3-year grant, effective September 1, 2023, will fund a collaborative research project to quantitatively characterize the speciation of mercury and radical budget in the Salt Lake City region. The key objectives are to: (1) conduct year-long measurements of elemental and divalent mercury, related oxidants, and other chemical/meteorological variables; (2) use a zero-dimensional model to identify mercury chemical mechanisms and reaction rates that minimize model-measurement discrepancies; and (3) update the GEOS-Chem mercury oxidation mechanism with the optimized model parameters. This work will enhance understanding of mercury chemistry and its impacts on chemical species like halogens, ozone, and nitrogen oxides. The project will also train two graduate students and engage with state regulators to extend the societal benefits of the research findings. As part of this project, Brigham Young University has issued a subaward to Snow College, another Utah-based educational institution, to support the collaborative research efforts.
