This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program provides $400,000 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) to acquire a high-performance computing system called the Cyberinfrastructure for Big Data Research (CYBR). The CYBR instrument will consist of 10 advanced compute nodes with AMD CPUs, NVIDIA GPUs, high-capacity RAM and storage to enable new data-intensive research capabilities at UAF. This includes improving scientific computing in areas critical to Alaska such as Arctic marine biology, coastal modeling, wildfire management, earthquake detection, mining safety, and space science. The CYBR system will also create training opportunities for students, including those from underrepresented communities. By integrating the new CYBR instrument with UAF's existing high-performance computing cluster, the project aims to optimize the system's accessibility and operational efficiency for researchers. The award was made on September 15, 2023 and is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2025.
