Project Grant 2319501
- This $552,775 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research to investigate benthic iron fluxes in the Labrador Sea, an important region of deep-water formation. The project aims to identify and quantify iron sources from ocean sediments to the overlying surface waters, which can influence the biological carbon pump in this high-latitude region. The research team from Florida State University will collect sediment and pore water...
- This $334,856 National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award to Kent State University supports research to study iron cycling in sediments in the Gulf of Alaska. The research aims to better understand the source of iron from sediments to the ocean water column in this high nutrient, low chlorophyll region, where iron limits primary productivity. The project will use a paired porewater and sediment geochemical approach to investigate the quantity, speciation, and remobilization processes...
- This Project Grant award for $197,103, provided by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050), supports a collaborative research effort to better understand the linkages between the oceanic cycles of iron and carbon. The project will integrate field observations from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) and Cape Verde Ocean Observatory regions with targeted experimental studies and advanced ocean biogeochemical modeling. Key areas of focus include examining...
- This Project Grant award for $540,281 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research project between U.S. and U.K. scientists to better understand the linkages between the oceanic cycles of iron and carbon. The research aims to characterize the "colloidal shunt" mechanism, whereby dissolved iron forms aggregates with organic carbon to create particulate matter that sinks out of the upper water column. The project will...
- This $480,149 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will fund a collaborative research project between the University of South Florida and the University of Hawaii. The research aims to measure iron isotopes in seawater samples from three GEOTRACES expeditions in the Pacific Ocean, producing an unprecedented data set. By combining these data with ocean biogeochemical modeling, the project will address important questions about the sources of...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) is focused on investigating benthic iron fluxes in the Labrador Sea, a critical region for deep-water formation and biological carbon cycling. The $134,212 award to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will support research to identify and quantify iron sources from ocean sediments to the overlying waters, using sediment sampling, pore water analysis, and numerical ocean circulation modeling....
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $562,895.00 to the Regents of the University of Minnesota to conduct collaborative research on the role of the "colloidal shunt" in mediating interactions between the ocean's iron and carbon cycles. The research aims to better characterize the mechanisms and linkages between dissolved organic carbon, iron-binding organic ligands, and the formation of particulate iron in the ocean....
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a Project Grant of $367,399 to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) under the NSF Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). This 3-year project, starting in June 2024, will conduct a time-series study of aerosol trace elements in the North Atlantic Ocean near Bermuda. The key objectives are to: Analyze temporal variations in the size distribution of aerosol iron and other bioactive trace elements, and link these to...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $824,656 project grant to the University of Washington (UW) to investigate the impact of iron availability on heterotrophic bacterial carbon consumption in the mesopelagic ocean's "twilight zone". The 3-year project, starting on May 1, 2025 and ending on April 30, 2028, will utilize a combination of laboratory studies and field experiments to test three related hypotheses on how iron and carbon...
- This $691,259 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support a collaborative research project to better understand the relationship between the oceanic cycles of iron and carbon. The award, titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: NSFGEO-NERC: THE COLLOIDAL SHUNT AS A CRITICAL NEXUS OF THE OCEAN IRON AND CARBON CYCLES," will be performed by researchers at Oregon State University. The project aims to characterize the "colloidal...
This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program Project Grant, awarded to Georgia Tech Research Corporation, will investigate the biogeochemical and physical processes regulating the benthic flux and speciation of iron from non-upwelling continental margins. The $880,688 award, effective October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2026, aims to quantify the flux of iron from sediments to the water column in the western North Atlantic Ocean and western Mediterranean Sea. The research team will measure different forms of dissolved iron and use reactive transport modeling to understand the role of organic carbon input and bottom water transport in the benthic flux of iron. This work will provide new data to improve ocean circulation models and predict the effects of climate change on ocean productivity, atmospheric CO2 consumption, sediment carbon transformation, and oxygen minimum zones. The project will also train two Ph.D. students from underrepresented minority groups and engage undergraduate and K-12 students through hands-on experiments and online lesson plans.
