The National Science Foundation awarded a $291,498 Project Grant to the University of Oregon under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to examine the ecological and environmental changes that occurred on land across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/PG) boundary in the Rocky Mountain region. The research will involve extensive paleontological and geochemical analyses of existing fossil collections and new field data to reveal the variability in the timing and pattern of terrestrial ecosystem rebuilding after the K/PG mass extinction. This project aims to expand knowledge of this major turning point in the history of life on Earth, helping to understand how the biodiversity of ecosystems recovers at a continental scale and the evolution of modern terrestrial biota. The results may also provide insights for conservation biology efforts to address current rapid changes in biodiversity. The award period is from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2028.
