The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) was awarded a $2,237,769 project grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program. This ethnographic research project, titled "Rhetorical Engineering Education to Support Proactive Equity Teaching and Outcomes" (RESPETO), will investigate how racialized discourse in engineering education creates barriers for Latinx students. The project will provide engineering faculty with a handbook of recommended teaching practices to challenge dominant linguistic norms and promote greater inclusion. The project will engage four cohorts of 10 Latinx undergraduate students as co-researchers to collect, analyze, and disseminate the findings through a digital handbook, social media, workshops, and conference presentations. This award supports NSF's goal of advancing racial equity in STEM education and the workforce.
