Yale University received a $540,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Computing and Communication Foundations under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.070). The three-year award beginning October 1, 2023 will support the development of a novel compositional theory of linearizability and a new Concurrent Abstract Layers (CCAL) toolkit to address current limitations in verifying realistic concurrent operating system kernels. Specifically, the university will conduct research to contribute a more generalized compositional theory of linearizability that can support realistic threading models containing multiple CPU cores, kernel/user-level threads, and hardware devices with interrupts. This will allow for liveness reasoning, crash-safe concurrency, and weak consistency models. Yale will also develop and implement various compositional program logics to verify safety and progress properties of concurrent objects under these conditions. Finally, the new theory and program logics will be integrated into an updated CCAL toolkit and applied to verify advanced kernel synchronization libraries and build certifiably correct concurrent operating system kernels and hypervisors.
