This $299,997 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure under the CFDA 47.070 Computer and Information Science and Engineering program supports the development of free and open-source software and a web interface for extracting high-precision brightness measurements of stars from citizen scientist observations collected with color digital cameras.
The project aims to greatly expand the pool of citizen scientists able to contribute to exoplanet and variable star research by providing tools to enable high-cadence, high-precision photometry of bright stars across much or all of the sky at a fraction of the cost of professional surveys. The software will be integrated into the data processing pipelines of three leading citizen science projects - PANOPTES, Exoplanet Watch, and the Unistellar Network - ensuring its wide adoption by the global citizen science community. The data collected will be used to search for additional transits of exoplanet candidates identified by the TESS satellite as well as transits of longer orbital period planets around both known short-period exoplanet systems and TESS transit candidates.
