This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Information and Intelligent Systems Project Grant award of $1,132,002 to the Regents of the University of Michigan, Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (doing business as the University of Michigan), will examine the design of sociotechnical systems that offer user controls for combating non-consensual intimate media (NCIM) and deter perpetrators from sharing it. The research objectives include: 1) understanding victim needs through design workshops; 2) examining norms around appropriate content sharing via online experiments; 3) designing systems to support victims tracking and requesting takedowns of non-consensual content; 4) designing systems to communicate content sharing preferences; 5) translating results into sociotechnical guidelines for combating NCIM; and 6) engaging in community outreach. The project will also explore technical questions around interfaces for expressing content sharing preferences and using digital watermarks to increase control over personal content. This work aims to provide technology companies and policymakers with empirically-evaluated designs for combating the severe harms caused by the widespread sharing of NCIM, which disproportionately impacts women.
