Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) was awarded a three-year $216,847 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop models, algorithms, and conduct simulations and applications for dendritic solidification processes in two-phase multi-component alloys within the mushy zone. Through this funding, three Principal Investigators from Virginia Tech and two other institutions will collaborate to: 1) develop a general two-phase multi-component phase-field model incorporating thermal diffusion, solute diffusion, convection, density variation, and energy transfer to simulate alloy solidification within the mushy zone; 2) design efficient and stable numerical schemes to accurately capture solidification dynamics; and 3) perform validation simulations and further studies to advance understanding of physically relevant problems. The results of this research are intended to guide alloy composition and property design. The grant completion date is July 31, 2026.
