The National Science Foundation awarded North Carolina State University a $384,585 Project Grant under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) to experimentally determine how the crystallization and rheology of basaltic lava evolve when subjected to realistic cooling curves. Through laboratory experiments, the university will reproduce realistic lava flow cooling paths and measure how lava's ability to deform and move changes throughout the process. The university will develop a detailed, physics-based rheological evolution map of a channelized basaltic lava flow. This deliverable will provide the volcanology community with a key tool to improve the ability to forecast lava flow emplacement and potentially mitigate damage to infrastructure. The period of performance is August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2026.
