The University of Delaware was awarded a $248,683 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences to develop a methodology for studying stellar flares using data from the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The project aims to leverage the LSST's image quality and sensitivity to constrain the temperature of stellar flares, which remain poorly understood, by using differential chromatic refraction in the Earth's atmosphere. The goal is to process LSST data and characterize a large sample of sparsely observed flare temperatures, which will help improve models of the physical processes behind flare emission and the relationship between flare parameters and stellar characteristics. This award falls under NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), which seeks to promote the progress of the mathematical and physical sciences and strengthen the nation's scientific enterprise.
