This $112,404 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the design, construction, and deployment of the Kinetically Activated Subsurface Microbial Sampler (KASMS) device by Montana State University. KASMS is an autonomous downhole fluid sampling system that will capture a time progression of fluid samples in response to seismic events within an active fault zone located 3 km below ground at the Moab Khotsong Gold Mine in South Africa. The samples collected by KASMS over the one-year deployment period will be analyzed for aqueous geochemistry, dissolved gases, and microbial content to study how subsurface microbial communities respond to environmental stimuli generated by seismic activity and mining operations. Results from this study aim to advance understanding of seismogenic earthquakes associated with deep mining and hydraulic fracturing activities.
