This two-year, $267,912 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research to improve paleoclimate proxy records in high-latitude regions. The principal investigator, George Mason University, will develop new and refine existing trace element to calcium ratio paleoproxies using planktic foraminifera species from the Northern California Current region. The research aims to establish temperature and salinity calibration relationships, investigate vital effects on trace element incorporation, and characterize local seawater isotopic signatures to better constrain species habitat depths. Oregon State University will receive a subaward of $XX,XXX to explore trace element variability in temperate to high-latitude foraminifera and characterize study area seawater and foraminifera. The products will enhance understanding of past ocean conditions in vulnerable high-latitude regions experiencing more extreme climate change impacts.
