Temple University received a $325,438 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049). The grant will fund research into instabilities in phase transitions, shell buckling, and inverse problems from August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2026. The university will analyze energy methods to study three types of instability with applications in materials science, mechanics, and signal processing. Researchers will develop tools to gain insight into quasiconvexity and properties of Stieltjes and completely monotone functions. The project also provides training for graduate students. Outcomes aim to improve understanding of critical strains in phase transformations, buckling of cylindrical shells, and algorithms for reconstructing material responses from indirect measurements.
