Through a $489,703 award under the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), Professor Dong Hee Son at Texas A&M University is investigating the use of dark excitons in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals to generate light and charge carriers with controllable quantum properties. The research team is exploring the energy and relaxation dynamics of single- and bi-exciton states formed from dark excitons, as well as the emission of correlated photon pairs and spin-polarized states. This work aims to leverage the long lifetimes and unique coupling pathways of dark excitons in these materials to produce photons and charges with new, desirable characteristics. In addition to the scientific research, the project will contribute to the training of graduate students, with a focus on engaging underrepresented groups, and conduct outreach activities to K-12 students and the local community.
