The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $131,201 Project Grant to the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate and develop compound-specific isotope analysis of amino acids (CSI-AA) to better understand the species-level ecology of planktonic foraminifera. The goal is to use CSI-AA from shell-bound organics to refine inferences about foraminifera's depth habitat, diet, and symbiosis in order to improve paleoclimate and paleoceanographic records. The project will first ground-truth CSI-AA applications in extant foraminifera species using plankton tows, sediment traps, and recent sedimentary samples, then apply the lessons learned to the fossil record. It will also assess amino acid preservation in fossils dating back to the Miocene, Eocene, and Cretaceous periods. This research aims to provide powerful new ways to describe the ecology of long-extinct planktonic foraminifera, which are key to understanding the Earth's past climate and trajectory.
