- The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (RF-SUNY) at the University at Albany was awarded a $339,771 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) for the period of July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026. Under this award, RF-SUNY will reconstruct Red Sea surface hydrography over the past 300 years by analyzing chemical properties of coral samples from across the eastern edge of the Red Sea. Specifically, measurements of oxygen-18 and...
- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will provide research services under a $355,135 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The institution will reconstruct Red Sea surface hydrography over the past 300 years using coral proxy records to examine the role of spatiotemporal climate variability in preconditioning the surface ocean for deep water formation. Specifically, the researchers will use measurements of oxygen-18...
- The Trustees of Union College in Schenectady, New York will receive $541,186 under a three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences. The grant will support the development of precipitation, evaporation and temperature records from tropical lake sediments and cave deposits for the last 700,000 years. This work directly aligns with the goals of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which aims to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Columbia University received a $286,967 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences (CFDA 47.050 - Geosciences) awarded on September 1, 2025, with completion targeted for August 31, 2028. The grant supports collaborative research investigating sea-level changes during the Last Interglacial Period (approximately 129,000 to 116,000 years ago) by analyzing fossil coral reefs and cave deposits from the Yucatán Peninsula. The project...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences awarded Columbia University $819,285 under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct a three-year research project (February 1, 2026 – January 31, 2029) investigating spatial variability in water-column beryllium-10 inventories in the South Pacific Ocean. The primary deliverable is a comprehensive beryllium isotope dataset generated through the analysis of co-located seawater, ocean particle, and...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050), provides $825,297 to The Trustees of Columbia University for the period of August 15, 2021 through July 31, 2024. The grant supports experimental refinement of the boron isotope proxy in planktic foraminifera to better understand temperature, asensitivity, and seawater elemental composition. A subaward of $50,000 is provided to Vassar College to...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $104,679 to Claremont McKenna College from June 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024 to conduct collaborative research on reconstructing a 250-year history of environmental conditions in the Gulf of Maine. The research team will use geochemical proxies in marine climate archives, such as growth bands in clams and crustose coralline algae, to generate multi-centennial,...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $771,667 Project Grant under its Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York, doing business as Columbia University. The grant, which runs from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2027, will support a research project to reconstruct deep ocean circulation in the North Atlantic during the last ice age climate cycle. The project will generate high-quality, high-resolution paleoceanographic data, including...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences Project Grant awarded $442,344 to The Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as the University of Colorado Office of Contracts and Grants Division, to conduct research under the NSF's Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) program. The research aims to evaluate the emergence of an anthropogenic signal in the tropical Indo-Pacific region by leveraging long-term, seasonal coral data, instrumental observations, and climate model...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Rowan University received a $184,226 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences (Geosciences Program, CFDA 47.050) effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2028. This collaborative research initiative will conduct high-resolution sampling and chemical analysis of benthic nepheloid layers (BNLs)—persistent zones of enhanced particle concentration near the seafloor—in the Labrador Sea to determine their role in...
Trustees of Union College in Schenectady, New York received a $137,890 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research reconstructing Red Sea surface hydrography variability over the past 300 years. The research aims to examine how Red Sea ocean circulation patterns change spatially and temporally in response to climate systems by generating coral proxy records of temperature, salinity and density extending back 200-400 years from four sites across the eastern Red Sea. The records will be analyzed to test the hypothesis that variability in salinity of northward-flowing Red Sea surface currents indicates strength of deep water ventilation. Linkages between precursors for Red Sea deep ventilation and broader surface ocean hydrography and regional climate phenomena will also be evaluated. The award period is from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026.
