This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.070), provides $203,483 to Indiana University to develop an objective-driven adaptive hybrid lossy compression framework for extreme-scale scientific applications. The framework aims to automatically construct the best-fit compression strategy for diverse user objectives in data-intensive scientific research. It will decouple state-of-the-art error-bounded lossy compression approaches into multiple stages, model the efficiency of approaches in each stage, and develop a loosely-coupled framework to aggregate stages and explore compression pipelines. The framework will optimize classic compression efficiency metrics as well as synthetic data movement performance regarding external devices and resources. Evaluation will assess multiple extreme-scale scientific applications including cosmological simulations, light source instrument data analytics, quantum circuit simulations, and climate simulations. Completion is set for July 31, 2023.
