Texas A&M University was awarded a $561,800 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) from December 15, 2023 to November 30, 2026.
Under this award, Texas A&M University researchers aim to provide synthetic access to novel spin manifolds and increase fundamental understanding of spin dynamics in organometallic superparamagnets. The program will study (1) high-performance single-molecule magnets based on new borolide complexes of lanthanide elements, (2) temperature and magnetic field dependence of heterometallic lanthanide complexes with strong lanthanide-lanthanide interactions and magnetically coupled ground states, and (3) electron spin coherence times of new organometallic platforms exhibiting spin frustration and toroidal magnetic ground states that can be coupled to electron spins of a rare earth ion. This research seeks to identify structure-function relationships of molecular spin manifolds to enable control and tuning of spin dynamics, with potential long-term applications in quantum information technologies.
