The University of Florida was awarded a $159,492 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems to develop neuromuscular simulations for predicting functional walking ability. The project aims to address gaps in understanding neuromuscular control impairments that limit walking ability and rehabilitating individuals based on their specific impairments. Researchers will use motion capture and predictive musculoskeletal computer simulation techniques to identify neuromuscular impairments impacting functional walking. This will provide fundamental knowledge to guide rehabilitation interventions and improve pathological walking. The project also includes opportunities for underrepresented K-12 and undergraduate students to learn how biomechanics can improve human health. The 12-month project beginning October 1, 2022 supports the NSF Engineering Directorate's goal of fostering innovation in engineering research.
