The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has received a $342,917 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The grant award covers the period from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2025. The purpose of this grant is to develop a design pipeline for creating recycling-friendly aluminum alloys. The research will (i) create a materials distribution model to inform recycling and future scrap streams, (ii) develop a Bayesian optimization algorithm to explore the alloy design space, and (iii) identify optimal alloy compositions and properties subject to constraints. This integrated approach aims to design new aluminum alloys that can incorporate a significant amount of recycled scrap while also being suitable for producing a wide range of other alloy products. The project also includes a sub-award to Brigham Young University to conduct research on "Designing Reusable Aluminum Alloys Based on Future Manufacturing Needs" in support of the overall grant objectives.
