This $217,041 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University to develop acoustic holography-enabled additive manufacturing of high-resolution multifunctional composites. The two-year award under the Engineering (47.041) federal grant program will conduct fundamental research to integrate acoustic holography and digital light processing for photo polymerization printing. This will allow for precise spatial control of embedded micro- and nano-particles in polymer matrix composites during additive manufacturing. The research aims to establish an acoustic holography-based particle patterning mechanism and fuse it with digital light processing to create a versatile apparatus for scalable additive manufacturing of novel multifunctional composites. The composites will contain periodic lattice-like patterns of diverse micro- and nano-particles tailored for applications such as ultrasonic signal processing devices and customized repair of aircraft composite structures.
