The National Science Foundation awarded a $104,889 Project Grant to The Ohio State University Office of Sponsored Programs under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075). The award will support research from October 2022 through November 2023 to better understand linguistic illusions and their cognitive basis. Specifically, the grantee will extend studies to a broader set of linguistic phenomena using behavioral and computational methods to analyze the exact conditions that trigger illusions. This work will provide insight into the cognitive architecture of language and the mental mechanisms for encoding, accessing, and manipulating sentence structures. It will also examine the role of grammar in sentence processing. In addition, the award will engage undergraduate researchers, including underrepresented minorities, to participate in the research through training programs and school outreach.
