This $250,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support the Re-envisioning Culture Network in deepening and expanding its mission outcomes. The Network aims to address challenges retaining and graduating Black students in biological sciences by transforming undergraduate biology teaching and learning culture and context. It will expand membership, develop teaching and mentoring resources, foster think tanks on innovative approaches, and support new collaborations advancing its goals. Leveraging critical, strengths-based frameworks of Blackness, the Network will create biology curricula, lessons, assessments and teaching resources to examine impacts on Black student success. It will also host annual think tanks and community strategizing efforts. The University of Illinois at Chicago will facilitate new research and teaching networks centering onto-epistemologies of Blackness within STEM. The three-year award period runs from October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2025.
