This $499,225 National Science Foundation award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund a collaborative research project between Old Dominion University Research Foundation and the United States Department of Geological Survey to decipher drivers and variability in salt marsh lateral carbon export. Over three years, the researchers will investigate how elevation within the tidal frame influences dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon export from six New England salt marsh sites. Using in-situ sensors and radiometric dating techniques, the team aims to quantify lateral carbon fluxes through tidal creeks and develop the first predictive model of carbon exports from tidal wetlands under changing sea levels. In addition to advancing scientific understanding of "blue carbon" sinks, the award supports training of two PhD students and providing research opportunities for undergraduates while engaging in local outreach activities. The sub-award to USGS will support related research on deciphering drivers and variability in salt marsh lateral carbon export.
