This $334,245 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings will support the development of a Data Sensing Learning Environment (DASLET) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. DASLET aims to enhance middle school students' computational thinking skills and engagement with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers related to the construction industry through embodied interaction with data sensing technologies in an immersive virtual reality environment. Working with approximately 40 teachers and 120 students, the research team will implement DASLET to investigate how such an environment can strengthen students' ability to address construction challenges by translating sensor data into computational rules to extract meaningful information for decision-making. Outcomes will help explain how embodied learning experiences within DASLET can boost interest in data sensing and STEM careers in the built environment. This award furthers the goals of the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), which supports enhancing U.S. STEM education.
