Cornell University received a $299,999 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation to support research related to quantum manufacturing and enabling integrated quantum network nodes. Specifically, the university will conduct early-concept research to tackle the challenge of networking local quantum computers using integrated optical networks. Key activities include integrating materials needed for high-quality optical devices that control and manipulate light with local elements that store fragile quantum information. Researchers will fabricate scalable nodes of a quantum optical network by taking advantage of advances in semiconductor growth. The university will characterize the optical and spin performance of fabricated structures to help clear bottlenecks for scalable quantum networks. As part of this NSF Engineering (47.041) grant, Cornell will also involve students in the quantum manufacturing research and aid in recruitment of female and underrepresented engineering students. The two-year project aims to help establish a quantum internet through solving critical materials and integration challenges.
