Todd Gingrich of Northwestern University will utilize $650,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) to develop algorithms for simulating reaction-diffusion kinetics using tensor network techniques. This project aims to advance computational approaches for analyzing chemical reaction networks without extensive repeated simulations. Gingrich's research group will characterize and optimize their tensor network method, applying it to study how subtle kinetic changes can impact nonequilibrium spatiotemporal patterns emerging from reaction-diffusion processes. They will disseminate computational code and create two educational web simulations, one for undergraduates and one for graduates, teaching aspects of stochastic kinetics and fluctuations in chemical systems. This work supports NSF's mission to strengthen the scientific enterprise through increased fundamental knowledge and understanding of challenging problems in chemical kinetics modeling.
