The National Science Foundation awarded a $462,591 Project Grant to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under the Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.041) for the period of July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2028. The grant will support research and development of a data-driven design and manufacturing platform for microelectronics polymers. The principal investigator will replace traditional batch reactor processes with continuous flow reactors to precisely control polymer properties and structures. Experimental and computational studies are aimed at enabling continuous flow chemistry for producing microelectronics polymers. Combined physics-based and machine learning models will be developed to predict process dynamics and variables such as polymer molecular weight and composition. It is expected that these models will reduce the chemical design space and expedite discovery of new polymers that meet performance requirements. A deliverable is an autonomous manufacturing platform using online monitoring and spectroscopy for feedback control of polymer quality attributes. The work will advance knowledge applicable to other specialty polymers and include education and outreach activities.
