Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) was awarded a three-year, $311,499 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to conduct collaborative research on large-amplitude, easy-plane spin-orbit torque oscillators. Under this award, Virginia Tech will develop a new class of microscale electronic oscillators called easy-plane spin-orbit torque oscillators, which could address issues like small output signals, nanoscale confinement, and thermal instability plaguing conventional oscillators. The university will identify mechanisms of unconventional spin currents and resulting spin torques in spin valves through first-principles calculations and experiments. It will also determine critical requirements for stable, large-angle precession in spin valves using micromagnetic simulations and device characterization. If successful, this research could lead to easy-plane oscillators with over an order of magnitude higher signal and stability compared to existing technologies. The award also includes an outreach component to teach K-12 students, especially those from underserved schools, about building simple magnetic motors to spark interest in science.
