This $250,000 National Science Foundation Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships Project Grant supports the development of artificial substrates for growing human stem cells suitable for clinical applications at Oakland University from March 2023 to February 2025. The goal is to accelerate the potential benefits of using human pluripotent stem cells and their derivatives for treating and curing diseases by producing a synthetic substrate that supports growth of human pluripotent stem cells in animal-free and fully defined conditions. Objectives include testing sterilization methods, determining shelf life, replicating substrate properties with different components, and selectively defining other culture components. The aim is to further improve and create a prototype synthetic substrate for commercialization. This new technology, if successful, will allow biomedical scientists to advance knowledge and clinical use of human pluripotent stem cells.
