- This $634,856 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) aims to advance equity-minded pedagogical change in the geosciences field. The project will leverage formative interventions to design and implement two learning environments: 1) an 8-hour short course for instructors to learn how racial exploitation and settler colonialism have shaped the history and current practices of the geosciences, and 2) a 2-day in-person workshop to provide...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in the amount of $280,566 with a performance period from November 1, 2024 to April 18, 2025. The "Developing Champions of Diversity with Appreciative Inquiry and Computational Simulation (CHAMPIONS)" project aims to address the persistent lack of diversity in the geosciences field through a bottom-up approach that empowers...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) a $843,830 Project Grant under the Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) program. The goal of this 2-year award is to develop strategies for creating more inclusive pathways into geoscience careers, particularly targeting underserved youth. The "Connecting Opportunities for Research Experiences (CORE) in the Geosciences" project will leverage SMM's expertise in STEM education and community engagement through...
- This federal Project Grant award of $289,578 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports the "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: GEOPATHS:GO: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH STUDENT EXPERIENCES ABOARD SHIPS (STEMSEAS)" project. The goal of this 4-year project is to increase the number and diversity of students pursuing degrees and careers in the geosciences by providing undergraduate students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, with...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded a $399,584 Project Grant to the University of Washington to enhance the diversity and retention of underrepresented groups in the academic geoscience field and the broader geoscience workforce. The three-year grant, which began on October 1, 2023, will pilot and test the effectiveness of an active learning program where graduate students in the geosciences receive training in evidence-based mentoring practices and are...
- This $563,190 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will support the development of a community-driven roadmap to advance broadening participation goals in the geoscience community over the next 50 years. The University of Texas at Austin will convene a conference for stakeholders from academia, industry, professional organizations, and government agencies to reflect on past efforts and cultivate new partnerships to support diversity, equity and...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities has awarded a $415,863 Project Grant to Florida State University (FSU) to implement a 3-year program titled "GP-IN: Bridging the Gap into Geosciences for Underrepresented Pre-College Populations through Experiential Learning Opportunities" (CFDA 47.050 - Geosciences). The project aims to improve awareness and increase the diversity of students interested in geoscience careers by exposing underrepresented pre-college...
- This Project Grant award of $188,180 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program aims to conduct virtual workshops and post-workshop activities to support and mentor two-year college geoscience faculty in developing, writing, and submitting proposals for funded STEM education improvement initiatives. The project is a collaboration between three two-year colleges and seeks to: introduce participants to relevant funding opportunities, foster a...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $407,527 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to Molloy University. The grant, titled "GP-UP: PROJECT RESTORES (RETENTION OF EARTH SCIENCE TRAINEES THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES IN RESTORATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES)", aims to increase the number of students in geosciences, retain historically underrepresented students in STEM fields, build faculty and institutional capacity, and produce highly qualified geoscience...
This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $299,958 provides funding for the Strengthening Traineeships and Research Opportunities for Next Generation Geoscientists at MSIs (STRONG at MSIs) project. The project will train ten Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and allied early career geoscience faculty, called Geoscience Faculty of the Future (GEOFFs), to effectively mentor and train STEM students from Minority Serving Institutions to thrive in geoscience graduate programs at research-intensive universities. The GEOFFs will participate in training from experienced geoscience faculty through the National Association of Geoscience Teachers to learn skills such as identifying MSI STEM students for graduate research assistantships, intentionally training students as research collaborators, and presenting inclusive curriculum. A summer research training experience led by the GEOFFs will provide hands-on practice mentoring ten selected MSI STEM students. The GEOFFs will also support each other through a research coordination network and advise on equitable graduate program admissions and retention. This National Science Foundation award under the Geosciences program aims to close knowledge gaps and embed inclusive leadership in geoscience departments nationwide.
