- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant of $195,406 awarded to the University of Washington aims to develop CALANOID, a modular, low-cost, air-deployable ocean profiling float system. The project seeks to advance the state of the art in ocean sensing technology by designing and validating a scalable profiling platform to capture high-resolution submesoscale ocean dynamics data. Key innovations include a compact buoyancy engine and a miniaturized,...
- This $304,963 SBIR Phase I project, awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program, aims to develop a constellation of small, high-altitude balloons for improved atmospheric data collection. The key product is a global network of long-duration, low-cost, lightweight weather balloons that can significantly reduce weather forecast uncertainty by filling data gaps over oceans and undersampled regions. The project's broader...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $213,430 Project Grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.070) program to The Ohio State University to develop a novel, miniature, fiber-optic multiparameter sensor capable of simultaneously measuring critical water quality and greenhouse gas parameters in lakes. The goal is to create an easy-to-deploy, cost-effective sensor that can provide high-resolution, year-round data to better understand the carbon...
- This federal Project Grant award of $537,789.00 was provided by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of California, Berkeley to conduct research on understanding past and future trends in tropical relative humidity over land. The overarching goal of the research is to develop a theoretical framework to account for observed changes in relative humidity over tropical continents, particularly in regions like India, and provide estimates for...
- This $600,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under CFDA Program 47.041 Engineering supports research to leverage light-matter interactions and the low-gravity space environment to develop new functional sensors. The project, titled "BRITE PIVOT: Leveraging Light-Matter Interactions to Create New Functional Sensors in Low-Gravity Space Environment," aims to investigate the effects of microgravity on the processing of nanocomposites and utilize this...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a 4-year, $490,570 Project Grant under its Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) program to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) to develop an autonomous eddy covariance air-sea CO2 flux measurement system for use on moored ocean buoys. This system is designed to provide accurate, low-power measurements of atmospheric and oceanic carbon dioxide exchange, which is critical for improving the predictive capabilities of climate models. As part of this project,...
- This $177,159 federal Project Grant was awarded on May 1, 2025 by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program. The grant supports a collaborative research project focused on improving the understanding and representation of atmospheric gravity waves using high-resolution observations and machine learning techniques. The key objectives are to leverage unprecedented observations from Loon high-altitude balloons, along with specialized...
- Southwest Sciences Inc. received a $250,000 Project Grant award from the Department of Energy Office of Science on February 22, 2021 to develop a diode laser hygrometer and thermometer for aerial vehicles. The award was made under the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049) to support the agency's mission of delivering scientific discoveries and tools to transform understanding of nature and advance U.S. energy and economic security. Through this funding, Southwest...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) award of $281,057 to The Trustees of Princeton University, awarded on January 1, 2025, will fund a project to explore the concept of "depth sensitive thermography" (DST) for mapping atmospheric temperatures over large scales. The project aims to develop a novel 3D temperature profiling technique that utilizes the atmosphere's varying opacity across thermal infrared wavelengths, with the goal of enabling more...
This $189,543 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports the development of a low-cost, lightweight hygrometer for in situ measurements of water vapor in the tropical tropopause layer on high-altitude balloons. The hygrometer will replace the previously used sensor in the RACHUTS instrument package, which collects temperature, humidity, and cloud particle observations to study cirrus cloud formation. The new sensor uses wavelength modulation spectroscopy and takes advantage of distributed feedback lasers and microcontrollers to measure water vapor from 2 to 500 parts per million with less than 5% error over 1 second, while weighing under 700 grams and using less than 3 watts of power. Successful development of the hygrometer will allow its use on a 2023 balloon test flight and for the 2024 Strateole-2 long-duration ballooning campaign. The award also fosters a new class of low-cost, lightweight instruments with various applications such as hurricane research and citizen science.
