This National Science Foundation project grant of $250,000 will fund research at the University of Southern California to develop a proof-of-concept prototype for an immersive and interactive three-dimensional display using swarms of flying light specks (FLS). The prototype will investigate techniques and algorithms to enable synchronized swarms of micro-drone FLS to render objects in a specified 3D volume that a user can touch and manipulate. Known as FLS-Matter, the project will create 2D and 3D geometric shapes using FLS with extendable behavior to serve as building blocks for rendered objects. Through simulation and studies with commercially available macro-sized drones, the research team will design physics-inspired frameworks for FLS swarms to safely react to human touch forces without injury. The project will also evaluate positioning systems to identify FLS and touch locations, as well as centralized and decentralized algorithms for scalability. This work under the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program aims to advance the development of research cyberinfrastructure and discovery in computing and information sciences.
