This $800,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) funds the development of new quantum communication technologies at The University of Texas at Arlington and Northwestern University through August 2025. The award supports research to increase quantum communication capacity by exploiting the spatial degrees of freedom of optical fibers. The universities will develop several types of high-capacity quantum communication links ranging from independent spatial quantum channels to links maintaining spatial coherence across multiple fiber modes or cores. The work aims to characterize and invert fiber transfer matrices to enable delivery of parallel quantum channels or high-dimensional qubits over metroscale distances, dramatically increasing capacity. Outreach activities will engage students in applied research with industrial partners on customized few-mode and multi-core fibers. Field testing of developed methods on installed fibers is also planned. Northwestern University is a sub-awardee collaborating on the research.
