The new instrumentation includes a fluorescence-activated cell sorter, acoustic liquid handlers, a robotic plate reader, and plate sealers, which will enable the laboratory to sequence the genomes of individual...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $207,000 Project Grant to support research titled "Elucidating the Diversity, Prevalence, and Stability of Deep-Sea RNA Viruses" from February 1, 2021 through January 31, 2024. This funding was provided through NSF's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), which aims to promote progress in the biological sciences and strengthen the nation's scientific enterprise through increasing knowledge and understanding of major problems....
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $815,899 Project Grant under the Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) program to the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) for a project titled "Unraveling the Ecological and Evolutionary Drivers of Marine Giant Virus Community Dynamics". The project aims to elucidate the ecological and evolutionary determinants of marine nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDVs), commonly known as "giant...
- This $400,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program supports research to model the complex dynamics of viruses and bacteria in ancient ocean-like environments. The project aims to identify "keystone" viruses that significantly influence microbial community structure and biogeochemistry in these stable, oxygen-free lake ecosystems. The research will develop innovative mathematical methods to predict...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) was awarded to Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences for $396,577 to conduct research on the evolutionary patterns, systematics, and biogeographic distribution of two abundant but understudied groups of bacteria known as Patescibacteria and Chloroflexota. The research aims to improve fundamental knowledge about these cryptic microbes that play important roles in marine sediment ecosystems and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $1,176,227 Project Grant to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to support research titled "Giant Viruses in the Open Ocean: Is Large Size Adaptive Where Cells are Scarce?" from January 15, 2022 through December 31, 2024. The grant funds basic research within the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to expand understanding of the integrated Earth system through atmospheric, earth, and ocean science studies. Specifically,...
- Micropure Genomics Inc. received a $274,199 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation to advance methods for rapid, end-to-end sample preparation for sequencing applications. Under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084), the company will develop an automated process relying on electro-hydrodynamic trapping to isolate genomic material like DNA or RNA from cells in a flow cartridge. The process aims to significantly reduce preparation time while...
- This $750,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program supports the development of a novel platform to enable rapid and robust identification of functional RNA molecules directly within mammalian cellular environments. The research aims to solve the challenge of RNA structure sensitivity to local environments that has hindered progress in the field of functional RNA discovery. The project will deliver a customized...
The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences will develop a novel microencapsulation-based technology for whole genome sequencing of RNA viruses from ocean environments under a two-year, $599,048 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences' Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The laboratory aims to address the pressing need for direct quantification methods for small RNA viruses in marine samples, which play a major role in microbial ecology and evolution but are difficult to detect with current approaches. By modifying its existing Environment Micro-Compartment Genomics technique for DNA particles, Bigelow Laboratory intends to enable genomic sequencing of both DNA and RNA particles from a single sample. This has potential to transform oceanography as well as public health and epidemiology by providing individual analysis of RNA viruses. The laboratory will also offer this RNA virus sequencing analysis as a global service and mentor an undergraduate student in related courses. If successful, this microencapsulation approach could have applications for RNA virus research, monitoring, and detection in other environments beyond the oceans.
